Overview
Perp (perpetual futures) DEXs are a category that, as an on-chain alternative to CEX derivatives trading (Binance / Bybit / OKX), reproduces leverage + the funding-rate mechanism in smart contracts. The design splits clearly into a 2 -way fork between CLOB (Central Limit Order Book on-chain) and AMM/oracle-pricing. CLOB is led by Hyperliquid and dYdX v4 , while AMM/oracle pricing is represented by GMX and Drift. In the 2024-2026 period, Hyperliquid showed overwhelming ascendancy, leading in the point that it realized CEX-grade latency and order-book UX on-chain. For the trading-volume comparison with CEXs, see (global-cex-top10-comparison); for spot DEXs, see (global-dex-major-five-comparison).
5 leaders’ profiles
- Hyperliquid — a CLOB perp-specialized DEX on its own L1 (Hyperliquid Chain). Operates the order book on-chain while achieving low latency. Perp 24h vol of $1-3B, top among perp DEXs. Launched the HYPE token in 2024-11 (an emission-based user-acquisition model with no presale). Founder Jeff Yan.
- dYdX v4 — fully migrated in 2023-10 from StarkEx L2 (Ethereum) to its own Cosmos chain (dYdX Chain). Operates the CLOB on the validator side and commits only settlement on-chain. DYDX token (native on Cosmos). US access is already blocked for regulatory compliance.
- GMX — deployed on Arbitrum + Avalanche. A single-pool model in which LPs contribute the GLP pool (a multi-asset pool) and become the counterparty to all traders. Under oracle pricing, prices come from Chainlink + an internal keeper. GMX token (governance + fee share). Peak in 2022-2023 → share decline in 2024 .
- Vertex Protocol — a CLOB + AMM hybrid on Arbitrum. Characterized by a multi-product design that integrates spot + perp + money market into 1 margin account. VRTX token.
- Drift Protocol — oracle pricing + AMM perp on Solana. Functions as the core hub of Solana-ecosystem perps. DRIFT token. A low-latency design that leverages Solana’s high speed.
Comparison table (design / chain / token / 24h vol)
| Name | chain | Design | token | 24h vol (estimated) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyperliquid | own L1 | CLOB | HYPE | $1-3B |
| dYdX v4 | Cosmos (dYdX Chain) | CLOB | DYDX | $0.3-1B |
| GMX | Arbitrum + Avalanche | oracle/GLP pool | GMX | $0.1-0.3B |
| Vertex | Arbitrum | CLOB+AMM hybrid | VRTX | $0.1-0.4B |
| Drift | Solana | oracle+AMM | DRIFT | $0.1-0.3B |
Design trade-off — CLOB is superior in order-type variety (limit / stop / IOC) + MEV resistance + price-discovery accuracy, but development complexity and performance requirements are high. AMM/oracle pricing carries LP risk (toxic flow) + slippage + oracle-manipulation vulnerability, but liquidity bootstrapping is simpler. On regulatory positioning, US-access blocking is progressing for every protocol (including Hyperliquid). In Japan, as unlisted tokens they are outside the scope of FSA warning letters, but because they are not on the JVCEA WhiteList (jvcea-whitelist-token-listing), they are not handled by domestic exchanges. For the pattern in which a chain-native DEX flips the incumbent leader, see (native-dex-flip-incumbent-pattern). Trading volume is subject to large market fluctuation, and the figures in the table are reference values in the approximate range as of 2025-2026 .
