The economic content: a swaption is a Black-style option on a forward swap rate, with the implied volatility of the underlying forward swap rate being the key pricing input.

The vol convention in JPY has shifted somewhat between Black log-normal and normal-vol (bp / yr) over the IBOR transition; the normal-vol quote is now more common, particularly when the absolute rate level is low and percentage vol becomes unstable.

Insurer demand for long-dated receiver swaptions is a structural driver of the long-end vol surface. The post-2024 BoJ regime shift (out of NIRP / YCC) materially changed the receiver-vol pricing dynamic because the prior decade’s near-zero-rate environment had compressed receiver values and pushed payer swaption activity to the foreground; a normalizing rate regime increases the practical value of receiver hedges.
Bermudan Callable Swaptions
A Bermudan swaption allows exercise on a pre-defined set of dates (rather than a single European date or continuously). The most common Bermudan structure in JPY is the callable embedded in a JPY-denominated bond or note:

Pricing Bermudan swaptions is materially more complex than European swaptions because the exercise decision at each date depends on the rate level and the option’s continuation value. Standard pricing approaches include Hull-White single-factor or multi-factor short-rate models, LIBOR market models, and Monte Carlo with regression-based exercise rules (Longstaff-Schwartz).

Life-Insurer Variable-Annuity (GMxB) Hedging
Life insurers offering variable annuity (VA) products with guaranteed minimum benefits (GMxB — GMDB, GMAB, GMIB, GMWB) embed substantial interest-rate volatility risk on their balance sheet. The general pattern: insurers who wrote VAs in the 1990s-2000s pre-NIRP era now face guarantees that are deeply ITM in a low-rate environment, requiring substantial receiver-swaption hedge positions. As JPY rates normalize, these hedges generate losses but the underlying guarantee values decrease in tandem; the dynamic hedge program nets out the moves.

Unlike standard JPY IRS, which is largely cleared at JSCC, swaptions have historically traded predominantly bilaterally. JSCC and other CCPs have expanded swaption clearing capability in some currencies; JPY swaption clearing remains a more recent and narrower scope than vanilla IRS. Most insurer / structured-note hedging swaption flow is bilateral, documented under ISDA Master and CSA, and subject to UMR Phase IM requirements for non-cleared trades above the threshold.
