Wiki route
This entry sits under trust-banks INDEX (its domain route). Read it against Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking (MUTB) and Mizuho Trust Bank for peer / contrast, and — critically — against SMBC Trust Bank, a similarly-named but separate-group trust bank. For the supervisory / system boundary see the FSA plus banking. Its holding-company parent is Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Group (SuMi TRUST).
TL;DR
Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, Limited (三井住友信託銀行, SMTB) is the core trust-bank operating company of Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Group (SuMi TRUST). It is a trust-business-concurrent financial institution that holds, in addition to a bank license under the Banking Act, a concurrent trust business under the Concurrent Operation Act, and is the center of one of Japan’s largest, strongly specialist-oriented trust-bank groups. Despite the similar name, it is a separate group from Smfg, and this boundary is decisively important in trust-bank analysis.

2. Operating model
As a trust-business-concurrent financial institution, SMTB conducts the following on an integrated basis:
- A combination of banking + trust + real estate: a combined commercial bank + trust bank + real estate service solution for individuals, corporations, financial institutions, and institutional investors.
- Pensions / asset administration / asset management: pension trusts, asset administration, and the provision of asset-management products.
- Securities agency / entrusted assets: securities agency as a shareholder-registry administrator, and management of entrusted assets.
Whereas the megabank-affiliated trust banks (MUTB and Mizuho Trust Bank) are one function of a commercial-banking group, SMTB differs in that it is the core of an independent holding-company group with a strongly trust-specialist character. On the asset-administration side it connects to Custody Bank of Japan (CBJ) and Master Trust Bank. Supervision is by Financial Services Agency (FSA).
3. Why this page matters
- A disambiguation anchor that establishes that SMTB — easily confused with SMFG due to the “Sumitomo Mitsui” name — is the center of an independent trust-bank group.
- From the standpoint of asset administration, pensions, real estate, trust entrustment, and investment-trust / financial-instruments intermediation, it must be viewed as a specialized trust bank rather than a mega commercial bank.
- A contrast with the group boundary against SMBC Trust Bank under SMFG.
